Farfetch: The Lingerie Edit

July 3, 2016

I feel as though I’ve spoken rather a lot of my love for the lingerie trend and wearing underwear as outerwear. It’s a trend that just exudes class and elegance whilst working for both day and night. So when Farfetch got in touch about The Lingerie Edit, I was exited to give it a go.

Farfetch is a leading online retailer that specialises in luxury fashion – believe me, you can while away hours on their website, lusting over a pair of Aquazzura heels, a Saint Laurent clutch or Isabelle Marrant jacket. Trust me, I haven’t moved from this spot all day (except to make copious cups of tea.)

The lingerie trend – while one of my favourites – isn’t necessarily an easy one to pull off. In my last post I featured a beautiful vintage silk Marks & Spencer nightie which baffled my boyfriend when he saw it. He couldn’t understand buying – what is essentially a nightie – to wear during the day. Often though, it’s the pieces that are intended as lingerie, which work best. They have intricate lace detailing, hang beautifully over the body and look sexy. It’s not  about wearing a full length nightie to do your weekly shop, but more about how you wear it: revealing a little bit of that lace bralet under a slouchy tee or teaming it with a slightly edgier outfit.

For my take on the Edit, I decided on the latter. I wanted to go a little outside of my comfort zone, pick something that required more thought and stay clear of the traditional blush pinks and nudes I normally choose and opt for something classic – and a little sexier.

Oh, Fleur Du Mal – I’ve fallen a little bit in love with your designs. It certainly wasn’t difficult choosing a brand here, their pieces are simply beautiful. I had an idea in my head to choose an outfit perfect for a first date. I wanted something casual, but classic. Not too revealing but feminine and I think this lace appliqué slip is just perfect. With the pretty scalloped lace detailing and thin spaghetti straps, this fits the classic and feminine look wonderfully. I love the longer length on this too, it gives a welcoming nod to the lingerie trend compared to the traditional short camisole.

I mentioned I wanted to give this look an edgier feel so I’ve paired the slip with a pair of skinny ripped black jeans – I love mixing delicate pieces with ripped jeans, it’s such an effortless way of incorporating different textures and styles. Rather than adding a tailored blazer, I wanted to maintain the casual feel and decided upon this stunning Saint Laurent classic leather jacket. I feel as though every man loves a woman in a biker jacket – is that statement too bold?! There is just something so chic yet masculine about a leather jacket – that’s why teaming it with delicate lace works so well.

If I’m being honest, I was so tempted to add these Oscar de la Renta heels to my shopping bag (that’s when I removed myself from the situation and went to make my fourth cup of tea). The simple style and mix of black with gold is just perfect for this Edit. I didn’t want anything too chunky on the foot, but instead, something that would ooze not only elegance but confidence too. With the ripped jeans and leather jacket, I think the lace slip needs something delicate to keep it looking fresh and feminine.

This beautifully embroidered Versace bag adds the perfect finishing touch to this Edit – matching the black and gold accents of the Oscar de la Renta heels, with on-trend embroidery and quilted leather effect.

I love the mix of masculine and feminine touches here – the slightly edgier feel of the leather jacket and distressed jeans paired with the delicate lace detailing of the lace slip work so well. You could easily work this outfit for day-to-night dressing too – pairing with flats during the day and adding heels for the evening.

The lingerie trend doesn’t have to be an obvious one – you can easily dip into it if you’re unsure – and that’s the beauty of it.

I’ve given you a little idea of how I would wear a lingerie piece, taken from the lovely collection available on Farfetch – I’d love to know what you all think and how you would style a piece for this trend!

Love, Harriet
